WORK WITH US!

We believe that reaching college students and faculty with the gospel is one of the most strategic ministry callings you could pursue! Listen to InterVarsity’s president, Tom Lin, to find out more about joining InterVarsity:

“Our mission is bold. There are over 2,500 campuses in the US with more than 1,000 students, and the majority of them have no known Christian ministry. Right now, the Holy Spirit is calling someone to join this work. Is it you?”

- Tom Lin, InterVarsity President

WHAT CAMPUS MINISTERS DO

Campus ministers work to increase the number of witnessing communities, as well as the size, health, and spiritual maturity of existing ones by being a…

Visionary Leader

Communicate and model InterVarsity’s vision by creating a culture of prayerful dependence on God, guiding students and faculty in God’s mission through studying scripture and setting goals that expectantly anticipate what God wants to do on campus.

Structural Architect

Build momentum for the vision by aligning programs, structures and leadership teams around the goal, and mobilizing students and faculty to engage their networks with the gospel and start new missional communities.

Missional Developer

Gather, invite, and disciple diverse groups of students and faculty so that they not only follow Jesus as Savior and Lord, but also advance the mission on campus as participants and leaders, equipping them to hear the Word, respond actively, and interpret the experience.

Collaborate with a network of other local, area, regional, and national InterVarsity employees and volunteers, contributing to team projects, and utilizing national resources, tools and conferences.

The Intern Year

Typically, your first year working with InterVarsity will be your Intern Year. The purpose of the Intern Year is to develop high-quality campus ministers via ministry experience, training from a seasoned campus minister, and communal learning.

EXPERIENCE

  • The hands-on work of everyday campus ministry life.

  • Discipling students, leading meetings, giving large group talks, discussing chapter vision, managing a budget, etc.

TRAINING

  • Is done by an experienced campus minister in weekly meetings.

  • The purpose of this time is to develop the intern as a visionary guide, structural architect, missional developer, and healthy campus minister.

Communal learning

  • Intern gatherings that occur 5-6 times throughout the school year for further training, community, discussion, and hearing from God.

  • Intern assignments (readings and writings) that take place in between meetings.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: If I’m hired, how will my placement be determined?
Placement is a mutual process between regional leadership and the campus intern candidate. Placement for the interns and for campus ministers are separate placement processes. Your intern placement is primarily determined by the best match of trainer and campus for the candidate (although personal situations and limitations are considered). If the candidate is hired, InterVarsity asks that the intern move to that location (which will be located in the state of Virginia) for one year.

Campus minister placement occurs after the completion of the Intern Year and more heavily weighs the circumstances and long-term location preferences of the new staff. Minister preference, campus availability, and “best fit” assessment are all taken into serious consideration in this placement process. Should the intern decide to stay on staff with InterVarsity after the Intern Year, the campus minister placement will be in the state of Virginia. If you are interested in working outside of Virginia, we will get you connected to the hiring director of that region (please note: their process for hiring and placement may be different than ours).

Q: Am I required to become a campus minister after the Intern Year?
No. The Intern Year is a year of discernment regarding your call to full-time ministry with InterVarsity. While we hope that the Intern Year will lead to a longer career with InterVarsity, if the Lord is sending you elsewhere after the Intern Year, we would bless you in your transition.

Q: After the Intern Program, do I have to be a campus minister for a certain number of years?
Our hope is that after a year of discernment through the Intern Program, interns who choose to stay with InterVarsity will commit to three years minimum at their campus ministry placement. There is no limit to the amount of time someone may stay with InterVarsity at their campus- long-term campus work at a college is highly feasible for those who feel called to campus ministry long-term.

Q: What does a typical week on campus look like?
On average, a typical work week consists of 40 hours.  This may vary depending on intern assignment workload, retreats/conferences, etc, but a week usually consists of approximately 5 hours of personal quiet time, 8 hours of working on assignments (readings and writings) for the Intern Program, 3 hours of mentorship with your trainer, 4 hours of prep work for your weekly meetings, 8 hours of meeting with students for discipleship, 8 hours of meetings (large group, small group, leadership meetings), and 4 hours of ministry partner development (MPD).

Q: Is there a position description for campus minister?
Yes! You can find the position description HERE.

Q: How does supervision work in InterVarsity?
Every campus minister is supervised by an Area Director (AD), determined by the location of their campus placement. Area Directors have extensive experience in campus ministry and pastoral care. Through weekly check-ins and quarterly meetings, ADs provide campus ministers with emotional and spiritual shepherding, ministry coaching, and strategic insight.

Q: How does fundraising work and what kind of training and tools will I be given to do it?
The development of a ministry partnership team who will both pray for and financially support a campus minister’s work with InterVarsity is a key part of being a campus staff minister. Staff are provided with robust fundraising training, a Ministry Partnership Development (MPD) coach, and organizational support throughout their entire time on staff. We have found that with training and resources, all interns have been able to raise the funds needed for ministry.

Q: I have more questions. Who should I reach out to?
Becca is Virginia’s Field Operations Director and can be reached at becca.saunders@intervarsity.org.
